世界で最もよく知られた木版画の１つを残した日本の画家が、繊細な水彩画も描いていた可能性があります。葛飾北斎は「神奈川沖浪裏」として知られる（浮世）絵を描いた１９世紀の画家ですが、オランダの研究者たちは、オランダの博物館で見つかった水彩画も北斎の作品ではないかと話しています。
その６つの作品は（オランダ）西部の都市ライデンにある国立民族学博物館が所蔵するもので、作者は不明とされています。それらの絵画は、１５０年以上前にドイツ人医師のフィリップ・フランツ・フォン・シーボルトがヨーロッパへ持ち帰った日本コレクションに含まれていたもので、研究者らがシーボルトの子孫が所蔵していた目録と照らし合わせたところ、「北斎が西洋の様式を用いて描いた」絵と記述された複数の作品が見つかったということです。
６点のうち５点は、日本の伝統的な紙である「和紙」に、当時江戸と呼ばれていた東京の町の風景を描いた水彩画で、当時の木版画においてはあまり知られていなかった、遠近法を用いています。研究者らは、これは北斎が西洋の絵画技法を理解していたことの証しではないかとしています。

The Japanese artist behind one of the world’s most famous woodblock prints may also have painted delicate watercolors. Katsushika Hokusai was the 19th-century artist who created the picture known as “The Great Wave off Kanagawa.” Now, Dutch researchers say he may also have painted watercolors found in a Netherlands museum.
The six works are from the National Museum of Ethnology in the western city of Leiden. The artist’s name is recorded as unknown. The pictures came to Europe more than 150 years ago in a Japanese collection brought home by German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold. The researchers compared the works to a list of art owned by Siebold’s descendant. They found some pieces described as paintings “by Hokusai in the Western style.”
Five of the six are watercolors on traditional “washi” Japanese paper, depicting townscapes of Tokyo, then called Edo. They use perspective techniques, which were relatively unknown in woodblock prints of the time. The researchers say this may prove Hokusai’s understanding of Western painting styles.
